Edinburg Economic Development Corporation Update

Arbor View Rehabilitation & Nursing Center L.L.C. will be creating 200 new jobs to be filled between July and December of 2010, once they relocate to Jackson Road and University Drive. This comes after the Edinburg Economic Development Board of Directors authorized EEDC to enter into a development agreement that gives a grant to Arbor View Rehabilitation & Nursing Center L.L.C. for investing in building, creating, and maintaining a payroll at an agreed upon level. read more >

Edinburg's Citrus Theater still standing strong

The Citrus Theater on the city’s downtown square may have shown its last movie a decade ago, but it doesn’t show its age inside.
A premiere movie theater when it opened in 1941, the Citrus has up-to-date plumbing and wiring inside and cast iron seating that he refuses to part with, said Felipe Garcia, an Edinburg attorney who purchased the building in 1996.

“The place is like a time capsule,” said Garcia, who is also a board member for the city’s economic development corporation. “You go inside and it’s like it always was.”

Edinburg Winning Back Local Customers

To keep its residents shopping locally, the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce and the city's economic development corporation set out a plan to get residents to visit small businesses and to offer more retail options to entice residents to stick around.

In the five years since the study, the city's results are reflected in annual sales tax revenues that have grown nearly $5 million, a similar pace in percentage increase to both McAllen and Mission.

But in the year since a retail development opened off Trenton Road — a byproduct of the city's attempts to expand its retail options — Edinburg has bucked a national trend of falling sales tax revenues.

As sales tax revenues in Hidalgo County wither during the worst recession in decades, Edinburg has pulled in 13 percent more this year so far than it did by this point last year.

Retail king McAllen, still dominant in sheer volume, has seen its sales tax revenues fall by 6 percent thus far this year. Mission is down 2 percent and Pharr's revenues declined 6 percent.

Doctors Hospital At Renaissance Designated Texas Enterprise Zone
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, located at 5501 South McColl Rd., has been reviewed, approved, and designated as a Texas Enterprise Zone after being nominated by the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation. The Texas Enterprise Zone Program is an economic development tool for local communities to partner with the State of Texas to promote job creation and capital investment in economically distressed areas of the state. A capital investment of over $50 million will create 500 jobs. The Texas Enterprise Zone Program requires that 25% of the projects new employees be economically disadvantaged individuals or enterprise zone residents. Enterprise zone residents include anyone who lives with in the city limits of Edinburg and in an economically distressed area. Once the initial capital investment is expended, the project may be eligible for a maximum refund of $1,250,000.00. read more >

EEDC Announces Continued Growth in the City
Ramiro Garza, Jr., Executive Director of the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, reports that Edinburg has generated $1,175,551.78 in sales tax revenue for the month of May 2009. This amount is up 21% from the same month in 2008. Year-to-date, Edinburg has collected $ 7,662,075.65 in sales tax revenue. This amount is up 13.2% from the same time last year.
